    NOTICE FOR RETURN TO SAILING

We are keen to encourage and support our members back onto the water, but this will only be possible with members' co-operation. It is essential that as a club, we adhere to current government advice, particularly with regard to social distancing, hygiene and the potential impact on the emergency services. It is also essential that we are seen to be keeping within these guidelines by the general public. In

    Quiz Night

Monday 11th May saw another lively and very closely fought quiz night. Despite the change from our usual day, we still had eleven teams - including two joining us for the first time - the Halls and the Starrs. There were four rounds: Geography and History, Famous names, Sayings and their origins, and Colours - with a bonus point round of photographs of well-known people when they were younger. On the

    LOSSC Commemorates VE Day

While club members could not be at the Club in person to commemorate VE Day, LOSSC Commodore, Barry Easton-Corke, assisted by long-standing club member Ric Hanslip, made sure the Signal Station was appropriately dressed to show our respects for the men and women who fought and lived through the war.

    LOSSC and VE Day

LOSSC Trustee Jerry Wells wrote the following to commemorate VE Day - a very interesting and evocative insight into VE Day in Lee 75 years ago. It was late in the afternoon of 7th May 1945 that the BBC interrupted its scheduled radio programmes to announce that Nazi Germany had signed the document of unconditional surrender and that the war in Europe would end at one minute after midnight the

    LOSSC Virtual Regatta Number 2

After an initial race in 49ers, which was won in a convincing manner by Kim Clarke, we returned to the preferred boat for the series the J70. We had the best turnout so far with 19 boats entered for the race but unfortunately we didn't get everyone down in the results as the game had a blip and spat us out. Some people also lost a few races due to connection issues, presumably

    Virtual Racing

For the first Monday night virtual racing things were a little confused for some including the organiser (I had never done it before the real thing is much easier!) The plan was to run 4 races rather than the 5 or 6 originally planed following a chat with Ed Child from Florida who had recently taken part in another event. The racing was in J70's of Cagliari and after a few issues getting

LOSSC Social Programme - Quiz Night 21 April

Following the success of our first Quiz night, we will be holding a second Quiz on Tuesday 21 April at 8.30pm. For the first quiz we had ten teams competing, including sailing and social members. There was some lively banter, some (hopefully) interesting questions, and just two points between the top two teams. Questions covered the natural world, geography, film and tv, food and drink, and sport. Well done to everyone who

    LOSSC Social Programme

We might not be able to go sailing or to meet up in person, but as the next best thing, we're offering a virtual programme of social activities to help us all get through the next few weeks. First up is a virtual quiz, which is being held at 8.30 pm on Tuesday, 14 April. The venue will be the Corona Arms (aka your own living room - which has the added

    COVID-19

In light of government and RYA advice regarding Coronavirus, the Management Committee have made the difficult decision to cancel forthcoming races, training and social events at the Club with immediate effect. Neither club boats nor patrol boats will be available for use until further notice. Although initially it appeared that members might still be able to take out their own boats, this is no longer the case. The Signal Station changing

    New Club Boats

Our youth and cadet members were excited to find themselves with two new club boats to put together on Saturday. The two RS Zests are well suited for teenagers and ideal for young members ready to progress from our club Toppers. They are lightweight and so easy to manoeuvre up and down the slipway as well as in the water. The Zest provides a perfect opportunity for youngsters to sail with

    GRAHAM CHILD

Today we will be saying our final goodbyes to Graham Child, a long-standing, much respected, well-loved member of LOSSC. Graham first joined LOSSC in the 1970s, since when he has been an active member both on and off the water. Graham was a highly skilled and very successful sailor, not only winning the GK24 National Championships and Albacore National Championships, but also the Albacore World Championships, where he represented LOSSC, in 1989. Rules of the Sea

We were very lucky to have Chris Watts, World Sailing's Lead Instructor for International Judging, sharing his knowledge with LOSSC members and visitors from Seafarers, Hill Head and Weston, on Thursday 6 February. Sometimes an incident on the water sticks in the brain. At the time you were convinced it was your right of way but with hindsight you're not so sure. Or you're convinced you were treated badly and want to get it
