Race Series

LOSSC holds a number of club racing series, with racing on Tuesday evenings, Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons throughout the main sailing season.

Sail Numbers - If competing in a race at LOSSC, please make sure you have a recognisable sail number clearly visible on your sail when competing.

If the Race Officer is unable to identify your boat, or you have not signed on, it will not be possible to record your result.

Race Duties

All races require a minimum of four people to ensure the race is run efficiently and safely. These are the Race Officer, Assistant Race Officer, Patrol Boat Driver and Patrol Boat Crew. Each Sailing member must complete at least four duties each year.

If you are competing in a series and miss a race due to having volunteered to do a duty, please remember to complete the sign-on sheet with your details so you can claim your average results for the race you miss.

A summary of the Race Duties and what these involve can be downloaded here Race Duty Overview 2024

Handicap Racing

The club has a healthy mixture of handicap races, as well as separate fleets for boats of all types and sizes. Our largest fleets are the Aeros, RS 400s, Phantoms and Solutions. Other boats regularly taking part include the 2000s, Lasers (ILCAs), Europes and a 49er.

The split between fast and slow and/or Asymmetric and conventional is decided depending upon the boats racing each year.

Classes are Fast (Sub PY-955), Medium (PY-956 to PY-1140) and Slow (PY-1141 to PY1642) which includes the Development racers of any class type.

Courses range from the short average-lap racing run over 30/40 minutes, to longer races up to 90 minutes.

Everyone is welcome, so please come along and join in.

Saturday Series

There are six series held on Saturdays. These run from the last weekend in March through to mid-November

There are three Class Start series (Fast, Medium/Slow and Devolopment fleets) and three all-in starts.

We have two series with two races per day and one with three races, these are average lap races with shorter courses and all-in starts. The start and the end of the season see our tthree Class Start series with one longer race per day.

There is a different course each week, with each race starting at 2.30 pm.

These races are open to all sailing members.

Tuesday and Thursday Series

There are three different series held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from April to September, with class starts for the Fast and Medium/Slow and Development fleets. The Fast fleet will set off first followed by a second start for the Medium and Slow together, the third start will be the Development.

A different course is set each week, taking into account weather, tide and conditions.

Races start at 6.45 pm (6.30 at the start and end of the season due to days being shorter)

These races are free to enter for all sailing members.

Novice Sailors - Race Development

Novice sailors are encouraged to join in on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings at 6.45 pm (6.30 pm at the start and end of the season due to days being shorter) and Saturday afternoons (2.30 pm). All types of boats are welcome.

During the Thursday Spring series, there will be a separate Race Development course, away from the main racing, with coaching and tuition available from experienced club sailors and Instructors both onshore and from a dedicated RIB. Please arrive by 6 pm and be rigged and ready as soon as possible.

After the initial six weeks, you will be ready to join in with the Development handicap after the main race.

These races are open to all novice adults and cadets and can be sailed in club boats.

In addition to our regular series, we also have many other opportunities for racing, including Bank Holiday and a number of one-off races. Please check the Racing Calendar for dates.
