Adult Beginners (RYA Levels 1 and 2)

LOSSC is an RYA-recognised Training Centre, offering RYA Level 1 for absolute beginners and RYA Level 2 for beginners ready to improve.

The RYA training pathway is an ideal introduction to sailing for anyone looking for a structured course and a qualification. It teaches the fundamental knowledge needed to be able to sail under supervision, taking you from a basic understanding of sailing techniques to confidently being able to sail around a course.

These courses are available to members aged 16 and over.

If you're not currently a member, please take a look at our Membership page to find out which Membership option would be best for you and how to join.

RYA Level 1 'Start Sailing' course is a great introduction to sailing.

The course starts with an evening session to meet the instructors, with a theory session focusing on appropriate clothing and what to expect.

This is followed by a two day on-water course over one weekend, at the Andrew Simpson Water Centre in Portsmouth, which will give you:

  • * A basic understanding of boat handling techniques
  • * Instruction about how to sail in all directions
  • * Background knowledge of weather, clothing, seamanship
  • * Practical skills and awareness of launching and recovering your boat
  • * Basic seamanship
  • * RYA Start Sailing logbook and beginner's handbooks

The amount of time spent on the water will be dependent on weather conditions.

Minimum course duration is approximately 16 hours.

Please check the Training Calendar for course dates and further details, or click here to BOOK ONLINE.

RYA Level 2 'Basic Skills' is available to club members, aged 16 and over, who hold their RYA Level 1. It is an ideal way to progress quickly from a beginner to being a confident sailor in a controlled, safe and enjoyable environment. On successful completion of the course you'll be able to sail a boat in good conditions, around a course.

We offer two options: either a course at the LOSSC over six Saturday mornings, or a two day course at Andrew Simpson Water Centre.

Each course includes:

  • * Progressing and practising your rigging and launching skills from Level 1
  • * Sailing in all directions
  • * Capsize recovery and essential safety knowledge
  • * Man overboard procedure
  • * Weather, tides and safety on the water

The amount of time spent on the water will be dependent on weather conditions.

Minimum course duration is approximately 16 hours.

Please check the Training Calendar for course dates and further details, or click here to BOOK ONLINE.

If you are not already a member, please see the Membership section of the website to see the different options available.
