Start Sailing

Whether you've never set foot in a boat or have years of sailing behind you, we offer a training programme with something for everyone - young and old, novice and experienced.

For younger sailors, we offer the Junior Cadet Club and Race Training.

For total beginners of any age, we have Open Days where you can go for a short sail with an experienced sailor in one of our club boats.

If you're looking for a structured sailing course, with a qualification at the end, we offer a combined RYA Level 1 and 2 for both absolute beginners and for those wanting to improve and to be able to sail a boat around a course. These are available to anyone aged 16 and above. We also offer a RYA Start Racing and Intermediate Racing course and the advanced level RYA Seamanship.

For competent sailors we hold informal race training courses, where you will be given advice on starting sequences, boat handling and racing strategy.

Take a look at our Training Calendar for dates and times of the various courses currently available.

Adult Beginners (RYA Levels 1 and 2)

LOSSC is an RYA-recognised Training Centre, offering a combined RYA Level 1 for absolute beginners and RYA Level 2 for beginners ready to improve.

These courses cover the fundamental knowledge needed to be able to sail under supervision, taking you from a basic understanding of sailing techniques to confidently being able to sail around a course.

These courses are available to members aged 16 and over and are run over 8 Saturday mornings during the summer.

If you're not currently a member, please take a look at our Membership page to find out which Membership option would be best for you and how to join.

Youth and Juniors

LOSSC is a family-friendly club, offering training, social sailing and racing opportunities for all ages.

We have dinghy training programmes which are available to young people: Cadets, covering from novice to RYA Stage 4 and the advanced levels RYA Race Training and RYA Seamanship.

Our RYA Adult Beginners (Level 1 and 2) courses are also open to young people aged 16 and upwards.

We also offer a Powerboat course which is open to 16 year-olds and upwards.

Cadets

The cost for the full Cadet sailing programme is just £95 per person.

All Cadet members must either hold a young persons' club membership or have a parent or guardian who is a member of the Club. Please take a look at Memberships if you're not already a member.

Please Note

A parent or guardian MUST be present at the Signal Station for young people aged 13 or under.

It is expected that a responsible adult will remain on hand for ALL Cadet members to provide support for their activities.

Patrol Boat Course

Most importantly, this half-day course will help you become familiar with rescue techniques, as well as elements of mark laying and race management.

While this course is based on the RYA Safety Boat course, it is focused specifically on the needs of safety at LOSSC and is not certificated.

Courses will be arranged when needed and advertised through our WhatOn newsletter.
