SNOOKER - Autumn / Winter Season Update

The nicer spring weather we are now enjoying heralds the close of the Winter snooker season; and what a season it has been.

It is the first time members have been able to enjoy playing snooker in our fabulous new Clubhouse facility. The opportunity to play the game has been taken up by many of our members, both male and female. One of our new lady players was quoted as saying "I didn't know how much fun playing snooker could be!"

It was also good to see snooker make a very considerable contribution to the running of our club.

We ran some Open Evenings early on, followed by some coaching sessions and of course some competitions.

First up was the Mitchell Cup, a straight knockout competition open to all club members. It was a great opportunity to play new people and for some, to find new friends. It was hotly contested of course, but matches were played very much in a sociable manner. The final was played during late March between Tommy Russell and Dave Marks. The clash of the Titans was very successfully streamed onto the big screen in the Club Bar. We were treated to an exceptional snooker match that went to three thrilling frames. There were many oohs and ahhs from the crowd watching. There were some great pots, cagey snookers and escapes with the match resulting in a win for Dave Marks. Well done to both players.

Also a winner, Tommy achieved the highest break of the season with a stonking 33.

Also a first for our club, was the introduction of a mixed doubles competition. This also attracted a healthy number of pairs entering the competition. We saw much practicing on the tables for this event and again, all in the spirit of having fun. The final was played out this week between the pair of Judith Taylor and Adrian Littlewood vs Tracey and Steve Porter. I must say that they both looked the part in their Union Jack waistcoats! After 2 frames the match was level and could have gone either way. The deciding frame saw some great play; a gap opened up but after a few good snookers it became close. After a tense final session the Ballard Trophy was won by Judith and Adrian. The competitors were met in the bar with rapturous applause from the crowd. Well done to all the players and for Tommy who donned the white gloves to referee the match.

As this year's formal competitions close, although some will be turning their attention to sailing and other outdoor activities, there will still be much snooker played during the summer, so we have introduced a snooker ladder for those who wish to take part. The ladder runs using third party software wotscore.com - many thanks to Dave Brewster for setting this up. If you would like to join the ladder please email snooker@lossc.org.uk.

If you would like to know more about getting involved in snooker then please use the same email address.

Finally, it has been a lot of fun playing with this bunch. There are many highlights but for me some of items of clothing worn demonstrate well the spirit of snooker at our club .. these include fancy patriotic waistcoats worn when playing to Adrian's black and white referees outfit with black bow tie and white gloves!
