Powerboat Course

Driving a power boat can be great fun, but it requires a good level of knowledge and respect for the water.

Aspiring powerboat drivers can join one of our LOSSC RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses. This will give you the skills and background knowledge needed to drive a powerboat or RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) and is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

You'll spend most of the time on the water on an open RIB, learning about powerboat theory, collision regulations, launching and recovery from Lee on the Solent slipway, boat handling, close quarters handling, high speed maneuvers, man overboard recovery, securing to a buoy, anchoring, leaving and coming alongside.

As there are a maximum of 7 students per course, early booking is advised.

Please check the Powerboat Trainig Calendar for courses and refresher training.

The cost for the LOSSC RYA Powerboat level 2 course, includes RYA books, certificates, hot drinks, fuel, instructor training and vessel wear and tear.

Trainees must be at least 16 years of age and either be a sailing or social member of LOSSC. As there are safety implications to the course which require a level of personal responsibility, awareness and maturity, it is the responsibility of the course instructor to decide whether a trainee is suitable to start or continue the course.

Prior to the course you should familiarise yourself with the following Standard Operating Procedures (Powerboat SOPs, Powerboat Training SOPs) which can be found in the Membership Area.

Once you have passed your Powerboat Level 2 qualification you may be asked to drive the club Patrol boat during one of the club races. The ability to drive a powerboat is just one of the qualities needed in order to be able to do this duty effectively. Take a look at the Race Duties Overview in the Members' Area for further information about what is required for patrol boat duties. We highly recommend that you sign up for the Patrol Boat Course before taking on this duty.

To book a place, please BOOK ONLINE.
